Traditionally we think of hammocks being used by sailors on ships. The English Royal Navy adopted a canvas sling hammock around 1590 as they were excellent for sailors sleeping in small cabins where limited space prevented the use of bunks.
However, garden hammocks originated from South America or the Caribbean where they are standard items in almost all yards and homes. In Venezuela it was customary for entire villages to raise their families in hammocks. They were very practical giving protection against snakes and scorpions. The material the hammocks were made of was always breathable to prevent fungal infections occurring due to the constant rain and high humidity.
Sometimes a finely woven netting would be placed on top to give protection against mosquitoes and all other flying and crawling insects. With various modifications it became known as a jungle hammock and the US Army eventually modified it to become their own version of the jungle hammock.
This of course made the use of hammocks popular from servicemen returning home and from people travelling overseas.
Hammocks have now been adapted to outdoors and indoors living as a luxury item instead of an everyday cheap version of a bed. The garden hammock comes in all shapes and sizes and colors. They have been adapted with spreader bars to make a flat surface to lie on. Some garden hammocks are double hammocks for those sociable types! And then of course there is the garden swing hammock which is an adaption of the garden hammock. The garden swing hammock is essentially a double or triple swing chair attached to a sturdy steel frame generally with a canopy overhead. These are very popular as they are relaxing to sit in.
The garden hammock in one of its mutations is here to stay in our backyards as we try to find time to relax and take time out.
